Summary on Grant Application Form
We will investigate the general mechanism of diffusion of atoms and vacancies along domain walls in inorganic ceramics and minerals by using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Domain walls, formed as a result of displacive phase transitions, may provide the most efficient route for the movement of atoms in these materials. We aim specifically to investigate these mechanisms by studying the movement of oxygen-depleted W03, ion diffusion in relaxor ceramics, and the diffusion of rare gas atoms in silicates. The work will require some development of appropriate simulation techniques.
