The project aims to demonstrate how active vibration control of a flexible structure using distributed sensors and actuators can be integrated with passive, highly non-linear, damping devices. A computational model will be used to drive an experimental test facility utilising electromagnetic shakers attached to flexible beams, in order to simulate a typical rotor assembly response to vibration. Distributed actuators and sensors attached to the beam will be used to optimise the performance of the total integrated system. By using a combination of passive and active devices it is envisaged that significant energy dissipation will be achieved through the passive devices hence reducing the need for high power actuators.Full use will be made of the Smart Structures Research Facility currently being developed within the School of Mechanical Engineering, making the experimental part of the proposed programme particularly cost effective. The project will also make use of previously validated non-linear mathematical models of typical aero-engine bearing assemblies, to ensure the response of the test facility is an accurate representation of a real assembly. In this way the project will demonstrate the potential use of a smart structure, in an application of realistic engineering complexity.
