Summary on Grant Application Form
Particle technology has found applications in many areas, such as process industries, mineral processing, agriculture and environmental engineering. operations in particle technology include size reduction, size enlargement, classification, separation of particles from fluids, particle fluid contacting, mixing and conveyance of particles, etc. Understanding well the behaviour of a particle system in such operations is dependent on measuring correct (and accurate) physical properties. Individual research groups including the applicant's, have previously established appropriate experimental methods for characterising the mechanical properties of single particles and particle assemblages. However, the technical demands of these methods makes them difficult to use and limits their wider application. The proposed work will develop a prototype of an instrumen for fully automated measurement of particle mechanical properties, which is to be achieved by incorporating an image analysis system into a micromanipulation rig, and developing software for automated detection of particle images in co-ordination with operation of the micromanipulation ri This will provide to a wide user community (concerned with particle technology) a very powerful to which is easy to use, fast and reliable.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Keywords describing areas of proposal.Chemical Engineering, Particle Technology, Instrumentation, Materials, Processing, Software Engineering
