Summary on Grant Application Form
The research is aimed at improving current knowledge of piezocone performance in layered soils, where the effects of soil disturbance (or smear) around the instrument during penetration may be significant. Piezocone performance will be systematically investigated by driving two sizes of piezocone (1 and 5cm-2) into specimens of layered soil and performing pore pressure dissipation tests. The specimens will be constructed in a 400mm diameter calibration chamber from layers of preconsolidated kaolin, alternating with thin layers of silty sand. The ability of the piezocones to detect the more permeable layers and to measure the coefficient of consolidation of the clay layers will be studied and the effect of filter position (cone tip, face, shoulder and shaft) on the pore pressure measurements will be investigated. Parametric studies of the influence of sand layer thickness, spacing and permeability on the performance of the piezocones will be conducted.
