Summary on Grant Application Form
We request funds for a three year PDRA for a named post-doc (V.Butun) to work on the synthesis and characterisation of shell cross-linked knedel (SCK) micelles based on various tertiary amine methacrylates. Mr Butun has spent the last few months of his PhD obtaining the preliminary results which form the basis of this proposal and is therefore uniquely qualified for this project. Four different classes of SCK micelles will be synthesised (see Case fur Support for further details). Each of these SCK micelles will be extensively characterised in terms of their micelle diameters using electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering and micelle aggregation numbers using static light scattering and analytical ultracentrifugation. In addition, the (de)hydration of the micelle cores will be monitored by proton NMR spectroscopy. Binding constants for the interaction of small molecules such as surfactants and dyes with selected SCK micelles will be determined by analytical ultracentrifuge measurements. Finally, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy will be used to examine the surface compositions of selected SCK micelles.
