Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is to make new types of magnetic nanomaterials using a newly developed technique. In this technique an intense beam of size selected clusters is cooled and deposited on a substrate together with an atomic 'matrix' beam. Material can be made with clusters in the size range from 1.5nm to 6.0nm and with a spread of sizes of 30% without magnetic selection of the beam and 3% with magnetic selection. The magnetic properties of a large variety of these materials will be measured and related to the structural properties. It is proposed to measure the magnetic anisotropy of spherical nanocrystals of various magnetic materials as a function of the average crystal size. Measurements will be made of different types of magnetic storage materials made by this method.
