Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of this work is to study the noise characteristics of a wide range of advanced thin high coercivity metal particle recording tapes to gain an understanding of the various noise sources within and eventually to arrive at an overview of how they contribute to the total noise in the media. This is to be achieved by carrying out a wide range of measurements and comparing the results with currently available and newly developed theory. Current theory is already known from past experiences to have shortcomings and therefore there will be a major development and application of micromagnetic theory to produce new predictions and understanding. These will be compared with observations and used to gain an insight into the origins of the various sources of noise. When the various mechanisms have been identified and understood means will be found of compounding them to produce an overview of how the various noises contribute to the total noise properties of the media.
