The proposed programme is concerned with the development of high temperature superconducting devices for sub-mm wave technology. The central aim of the research is to explore the possibilities for the development of HTSC josephson junction mixers integrated with photodetecting elements to use a photomixers for homodyne and heterodyne detection. An important theme to the research is to make use of mnicrolithography techniques to introduce controllable arrays of pinning centres into the devices to modify the behaviour of fluxoids trapped in the superconductor. Controlling the flux lattice has significant consequences for the dynamics of the optical and electrical responses of the superconductor and may lead to more complex two and three terminal devices in future work.
