Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposal is to determine the magnetic structure as a function of applied magnetic field and the magnetic fluctuations in layered magnetoresistive manganites. The motivation is to understand the metal-insulator transition and the magnetoresistance in these materials. They are layered analogues of the colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) cubic manganites. They likewise exhibit a delicate balance between delocalisation and localisation within the (metallic) layers, but have the additional ingredient of a weak, field sensitive link between the layers which gives a strong structural analogy to artificial magnetic multi-layers. Neutron scattering directly measures the static and dynamic correlation functions of the electron magnetism in condensed matter, and it is the magnetic structure and dynamics which lie at the heart of the CMR effect in these materials. The results from the experiments will be used to formulate and test models of the origin of CMR and the metal-insulator in the layered manganites.
