Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to develop a design methodology for the implementation of continuous-time fully-integrated tuneable filters based on the direct exploitation of non-linear device characteristics. This approach has been recently proposed for bipolar technology as the 'log-domain' technique, in which the exponential relationship between collector current and base-emitter voltage is directly incorporated into the state-space description of a network transfer function. The use of large signal device equations leads to the potential for wide dynamic range under low power supply voltages. A first aim of the research project will be to develop high performance log-domain filters using a fast complementary bipolar technology, for application in broadband RF/IF receiver architectures where high frequency operation, broad-bandwidth and wide dynamic range are required simultaneously. A second aim will be to extend this bipolar log-domain approach to subthreshold CMOS technology, to implement circuit building blocks for analogue micropower signal processing. Here the application area will be for very low poser baseband and video processors. A third aim will be to formalise these synthesis methods into a systematic approach suitable for computer-aided circuit design, in which a log-domain filter can be synthesised directly from a filter specification.
