Summary on Grant Application Form
The Type IV high-temperature creep failure of welds in Ferritic steel branched pipe connections at 590 degrees centigrade is to be researched using Finite Element Analysis techniques based on creep Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM). The research takes a starting point mechanism-based constitutive equations already developed in conjunction with Nuclear Electric. Research will be carried out on the CDM Finite Element computer software DAMAGE XX to enable it to run significantly faster for the large sets of equations necessary to model 3-D branches. Virtual reality techniques will be used to interrogate data sets, both in 3-D, and in time.Sensitivity studies will be carried out to understand the importance of weld and vessel geometries, and of external loading conditions such as internal pressure, end loads, and in-plane bending moments. From these studies observations will be made of generic trends and recommendations will be made for improved design codes, remanent life assessment, and approximate design analysis methods.
