The emerging optical technique of RAS has the potential to become a real time probe and surface processes in a variety of environments. This proposal addresses a number of problems which currently limit the development of RAS. Firstly we will construct an instrument capable of recording a full RAS spectrum in 20msec, a 1000 fold improvement over the response time of existing instruments. Secondly we will carry out pioneering studies on a number of metal surfaces chosen to test the applicability of empirical expressions for the RAS responses derived from Fresnel theory. Thirdly, in collaboration with Del Sole, a leading theoretician from Rome, we will carry out combined experimental and theoretical studies of a number of well characterised semiconducting and metal systems. Finally we will assess the effects of surface roughness on the RAS response and use the new instrument to obtain information on dynamic processes occurring on surfaces.As a result of this programme RAS will become a valuable experimental tool in several important fields of interdisciplinary research.
