Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a workshop to discuss with major US and EU figures with the same concerns: the near future role of architectures for areas of the Language Engineering (LE) technology are which are near a point at which they may make the transition from laboratory to marketplace. Out argument is that, Software Architecture for LE (SALE) can play an important role, and it is this realisation that has led to recent US funding efforts, notably in the TIPSTER programme. The UK should not allow itself to fall behind in this area, particularly when our proximity to multilingual Europe gives us a competitive advantage in the coming wave of Internet-driven LE productisation. The UK has developed NLP architectures (including GATE at Sheffield) and we should now discuss the future role of such platforms, with respect to each other, and so as to maximise the gains made in resource development for NLP by facilitating its use and maintenance.
