Summary on Grant Application Form
It is aimed to build upon our strengths in in-process measurements on polymer melts, by novel use of ultrasound in the injection moulding nozzle and cavity. Our current high temperatures sensors, resolving transit time to ~1ns at 10Hz sampling rate, will be developed for nozzle use for volumetric flow rate measurements of melts during processing and multivariable analysis (including neural networks) transit time attention dependence on process variables, to obtain real time mean melt temperatures. Melt flow front position in the cavity will be studied using ultrasound along and across the flow, for validation of computer modelling; the signals will also be used to infer phase/morphological changes in the polymer.
