Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will apply management science and engineering to configure a truly lean automotive enterprise. This enterprise will achieve very high levels of customer responsiveness (order to delivery in 3 days) and operate with minimum waste and maximum added value. The research focuses on the development of a coherent and consistent conceptual framework within which a feasible '3 day car' can be built, supported by a clearly documented set of tools and techniques. The social and environmental impact of new forms of car production and late configuration will also be examined. The research methodology is centred around total system issues, covering all aspects of the customer to raw material chain. There will be six investigation streams: marketing, technology, organisation, system, environment and costing. These research streams will be tightly co-ordinated and all researchers will contribute to total project issues. Three principal investigators, five full time researchers and external specialists will carry out the research in a joint venture between three highly qualified research teams.External funding will be provided by engaging a wide range of interested organisations in participative sponsorship. The sponsors will be involved in a strong dissemination programme, including conferences, seminars, publications and electronic media. Keywords describing areas of proposal.Manufacturing, Transport, Automotive, Distribution, Lean Enterprise, Supply Chain
