|
The research will be performed in 4 stages: 1) current and potential use IT in knowledge management and organisational learning (KM and OL) on recent construction projects will be assessed. This will be by interviews, question being related to a generic process map of the construction projects. 2) Project information flows will be modelled and areas of potential IT application assessed. Modelling will be by IDEFO and EXPRESS. 3) The potential commercial and technical applications of IT in KM and OL will be investigated, both technically and from a cost/benefit basis. This will be done in several ways. First, exploring and evaluating the benefit/costs of current research initiatives (drawing particularly on BRE and Ove Arup work). Second, examining methods for acquiring/storing knowledge using IT based sources of knowledge. Third, by exploring the potential benefit of high level information modelling, and mapping between models. Fourth, by investigating some of organisational learning tools now becoming available, particularly the productivity orientated toolboxes being developed by UMIST. 4) Selected examples of IT as aids in more effective KM and OL will then be tested. Resource and time is budgeted for effective dissemination of the research results.
