Summary on Grant Application Form
Theoretically the component-based (CB) paradigm can deliver (i) a significant reduction in implementation costs and (ii) greater production system agility. However a practical component-based automation approach has yet to be realised and adopted by the automotive manufacturing sector. Such a development requires new research to thoroughly access its capabilities from business and engineering perspectives. Also required is a concerted effort of manufacturing end users, machine and control system builders and vendors of current generation machine components. This project will conduct the necessary research and through a collaborative effort of influencial parties in the field will develop and apply a CB approach to the life cycle engineering of transfer and assembly machines used in automotive engine manufacture. CB systems will be implemented and tested under conditions which thoroughly test their practicability in the field. Also project partners will investigate means of achieving a broad based industrial exploitation of the CB paradigm. Keywords describing areas of proposal.
