Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is based around an investigation of the tribology of painted systems (such as automotive paints). The aim of the study is to develop an understanding of the composite mechanical response of the multi-layered paint system from a knowledge of how the different layers of the system respond to contact. This fundamental knowledge will be used to develop a model of how paint systems respond to an applied load. Further, environmental influences such as exposure of the paint system to ultra-violet, differing temperatures and humidities will be studied in order to understand how the mechanical properties deteriorate with time. This work will allow a detailed understanding of the way in which paint systems respond to differing tribological contact situations to be developed and then used to improve overall paint performance. One of the critical requirements for this project is a means of assessing the adhesion of the paint system to the substrate and then reassessing the adhesion after environmental exposure. Scratch testing is one of the best methods for investigating interfacial delamination and therefore funds to purchase a scratch tester are requested. This will be a completely new and detailed approach to understanding the contact damage of paint systems.
