Three different types of TiAl-based alloys (one that has a single alpha phase field at high temperatures, two that have single phase beta phase field at high temperatures but which transform on cooling either through a two phase field or through a three phase field) will be used as model alloys to determine the different types of TTT and CCT behaviours. A Gleeble 3500 thermo-mechanical simulator will be used to carry out the range of controlled cooling and holding experiments that will be required and analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopy will be used to determine the natures of the phase formed under different cooling/holding conditions. Dilatometric measurements will be carried out in the Gleeble which will provide additional transformation data. The mechanical properties will be assessed for some heat treatments selected on the basis of the TEM and SEM observations.
