There is a view in the packaging industry that current design tools are not fully developed to support the minimisation of conflicts between funtional, marketing, economic and legislative constraints. A survey of 8 months extent is proposed, to assess whether there are areas of generic research to establish better tools, as outlined in objectives above. A five element programme is proposed: I - development with industry support of a product-industry matrix to support a survey of existing tools/activities; II - a questionnaire of companies tp establish information; III - follow up case studies of selected companies; IV - commissioning of external consultancy reviews; V - final report preparation, with recommendations.
