Although mathematical treatment of multicomponent diffusional mass transfer and simplified mathematical analysis has been proposed (Wesselingh and Krishna, 1999), there is very little experimental work to complement those results using a Mach Zenhder interferometer to get concentration profiles in the region very close to the interface, for multicomponent clean systems and when contaminated with surfactants, in order to get an understanding of the interfacial phenomena present and in order to validate or improve existent theories. This work is of great industrial importance, as most industrial streams are made up of many components undergoing mass transfer. As the mass transfer process is not fully understood it is not optimised, as recognised by Dr Keith Carpenter, on behalf of Zeneca, and Professor Rodney Townsend, on behalf of Unilever, who are supportive of the work proposed and would be very keen to interact were this proposal to be successful.
