Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research aims to develop polymeric macroporous monolithic columns for the rapid purification of hyperbranched polymer systems, especially dendrimers. The monolithic separation media will be produced by the bulk polymerisation of a variety of common monomers and cross linking agents, such as methacrylic acid and ethylene dimethacrylate, in combination with porogenic dendrimer templates to realise a highly defined and selective environment within the column. The synthetic focus of the research will be to contruct a range of stable functionalised monodisperse dendrimers possessing different generations and molecular weights by convergent growth strategies for evaluation as covalent and non-covalent templates for molecular imprinting of macroporous monolithic separation media. The monolithic columns produced will then be investigated extensively using HPLC to assess their respective separation characteristics for a variety of hyperbranched polymers. Comparisons with existing particulate packed bed separation media will be made. The efficacy of the dendrimer templates will be assessed by using mercury porisimetry to determine the pore size distribution within the macroporous polymers.
