The proposed programme is a continuation of the investigation of the sizes, shapes and moments of radioactive isotopes by laser spectroscopy.The main theme of the work will be carried out in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland at the Jyvaskyla Cyclotron laboratory. Short-lived radioactive isotopes are produced by the cyclotron through nuclear reaction. Reaction products are separated by an on-line separator which works on separation time of the order of five milliseconds. Mass-separated reaction products are then studied by collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy using an ultrasensitive coincidence technique invented by the collaboration. It has been demonstrated that the method is able to study nuclei far from stability and the Jyvaskyla opens up a field of refractory elements not previously studied. We propose to develop a technique of resonance ionisation spectroscopy using the IGISOL which can be applied with great sensitivity to short-lived isotopes in the trans-lead region. Software for the new data acquisition system will be developed, installed and tested.
