The proposed project is a pilot study concerned with applying the technical results of a previous EPSRC funded project (COMMIT) to improve the effectiveness of collaborative design in construction.The project will bring together the decision support software and techniques developed in the COMMIT project with the advanced CAD facilities of Microstation/J (currently being developed by Bentley Systems), and apply the resulting tools in a real construction design project within BDP (a large design partnership).The project is primarily concerned with managing ownership, versioning, schema evolution, recording of intent, dependencies, and change notification to the design process within construction projects. It tackles the challenging problem of managing design information, including eliciting design rationale, without intruding too much on the design process itself. It provides the possibility to effectively link design decisions back to requirements, to gather rationale information for alter sates of the building lifecycle, and to gather knowledge of rationale for alter projects.In addition to the main partners, an advisory group will be set up including BAA (the British Airports Authority) to provide input to the project from the construction client's point of view.
