The aim of the proposed research is to contribute towards the establishment of functional representations for assembled products. A functional representation describers the form of a functional model. A functional model supports applications or activities that require data or information about the purpose or behaviour of the product. The context for the research will be the application of Design for Assembly (DFA) during product redesign.The proposed research will build upon data models previously developed at the University of Leeds by considering whether the functional data supported by the data models is sufficient to support DFA analysis. With the insights provided by considering the criteria required for DFA in the light of a number of case studies, the representation scheme will be enhanced and extended. Experimental software will be developed to act as a 'proof of concept' demonstrator.The benefits of the research is that it will allow us to identify the key characteristics of functional data. One area of benefit will be for manufactures of complex systems, and vendors of product data management systems, who wish to be able to communicate design change through product structures.
