Wave overtopping of sea walls and breakwaters affects their serviceability and the safety of those using them. Empirical formulae predict mean and maximum overtopping discharges, but are derived for conditions for which wave impacts seldom occur. Recent work by Besley et al (1998) has demonstrated that present design methods may significantly underestimate wave overtopping under wave impacting conditions. This project aims to develop new/improved methods to predict overtopping using parametric 2-d and 3-d wave flume and basin tests. Simple formulae developed from 2-d tests will be extended by 3-d tests to account for effects of non-uniform approach bathymetry, oblique wave attach and 3-d structure geometries. The findings of the proposed work will be tested against practical cases in collaboration with the end users supporting the project. New/corrected formulae will be disseminated to end-users at a specialist seminar at ICE, London and through publications in conferences and specialist journals.This project includes only physical model tests, but is complemented by the proposed project of Causon/Ingram, which will develop and validate improved numerical models in close co-operation. Comparisons will also be made with field measurements through co-operation with HR Wallingford.
