Summary on Grant Application Form
The explosion of the World Wide Web has shown the potential for an all encompassing cyberspace. Its major strength is that anyone can publish information. The drive towards 3D environments has led to the VRML2 specification. This is not immersive and does not build worlds which are arbitrarily extensible across multiple servers. Its experience is of deserted cities on unconnected 3D islands. The aim of the project is to make the boundaries between 3D worlds supported by different servers as implicit as possible, so movement between, as well as within, virtual worlds becomes natural. In order to retain the ability of arbitrary publishing, this inclusion must avoid both visually confusing inconsistencies and the need for coordination between two site designers. The addition of immersion requires a more active role for the servers, they need to maintain client lists, model object interactions and ensure that clients are updated in a timely manner. To simplify navigation in the virtual environment, the application of artefacts of reality will be investigated. For instance network latency might be hidden in the physics cf the virtual environment, and so not be distracting.
