The aim is to provide high quality data on sediment transport rates in equilibrium, and non-equilibrium, alluvial channels with inbank and overbank flows, some rigidly confined and others free-formed, for comparison with the recent Flood Channel Facility (FCF) data. The work will use a 23m long research flume at Birmingham University, specially constructed for overbank flow studies with adjustable floodplain geometries over a 18m long working section, and has 4 main purposes.1. To study sediment transport rates, resistance and stage-discharge curves extensively in overbank flow in compound channels of different geometries, under a wide range of quasi-uniform conditions.2. To make a definitive study of three pairs of geometrically comparable compound channels, with and without a sediment bed, in order to determine precisely the difference that the sediment bed makes on lateral momentum transfer, re-distribution of local boundary shear stresses, and stage-discharge curves.3. To examine non-equilibrium sediment supply rates in overbank flow and the effect on channel morphology.4. To make a study of 'active widths' and bank erosion rates in free-formed channels, together with the basis of rational regime theories, following Ikeda (1981), Kovacs & Parker (1994) and Bettess (1982 and 1987).
