Summary on Grant Application Form
Following on from a successful gas-insulated transformer project, it is proposed to apply a similar technology to the development of a gas insulated rotating machine. The philosophy, analytical techniques and overall objectives are the same; specifically to remove the bulk of the solid insulation from around the conducting members in order to improve the dissipation of heat generated in the windings and thereby to reduce its size, weight and cost for a comparable rating, or to improve the rating of a machine of a given size.Novel conductor structures and conductor supports will be investigate with regard to electrical stress patterns, gas flow and heat transfer, initially by computer simulation and finally by tests on a laminated flat-bed stator containing a limited number of slots.
