The objective is to obtain perfect field orientated flux and torque control for induction motor drives, especially at zero and low speed. The method proposed relies on high frequency voltage injection along the main flux axis, with the resultant high frequency current being used to home in on the saturation axis. The work addresses the most import control problem of sensorless induction motor drives - accurate speed and torque control at zero and low speeds - which has as yet not been solved by model based approaches. The project will validate the proposed flux detection method and investigate aspects which may limit performance or viability. These include transient performance, loss minimisation and efficiency and the effects of rotor slotting. It is also proposed to demonstrate enhancement in low and zero speed estimation through exploiting the model independent flux position in model based estimators. Work will procede via simulation (using MATLAB/Simulink), and by the construction and use of a 5kW experimental rig. A PhD Studentship is requested which will apply the new method to permanent magnet AC machines.It should be noted that the list of industrial collaborators supports the claim that the work proposed is fundamental research and pre-competitive.
