Summary on Grant Application Form
1. Identification and prototyping of algorithms for motion and structure estimation from underwater video sequences assuming both calibrated and uncalibrated cameras. Theoretical advancements are expected here (e.g. taking forward work done under EPSRC grant GR/L18716). Testing on synthetic data and real ROV video sequences from the OSL data archive. This phase builds on a wealth of existing software (partially developed by the Fellow himself). Expected period: months 1-4.2. Implementation and testing of prototypes on robot-mounted sensor head currently operational in one of the OSL tanks. Expected period: months 4-5.3. Evaluation of implemented techniques with respect to (a) robustness and reliability in typical operation conditions, and (b) suitability for inclusion in a real-time ROV/AUV control system. Expected period: months 4-6.The above plan is designed in such a way to maximise integration with and benefits to related, ongoing OSL projects assuming a starting date between January and April 1999.
