Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal details a research programme to provide a sound scientific basis on which the manufacture and use of hydraulic lime in the UK can reach the level required by the construction industry. State-of-the-art 'in-situ' and 'ex-situ' microstructural methods involving hot stage x-ray diffraction, environmental scanning electron, scanning ion, electron microprobe, x-ray photoelectron, laser micro-Raman and infrared microscopy, will be used for fundamental studies on the constituent materials and curing mechanisms involved in the production of lime/mortar and render mixes. Concurrent measurements using established industry standard methods of physical analysis will support these studies to establish the role of specific alumina/silica and other pozzolana phases and the effects of humidity, frost/thaw cycles, temperature, CO2 atmospheres and the environmental pollutants SO2 and NOx.
