This proposal builds on an established collaboration between the Keele Polymer Diffraction Group and ICI through the application of time-resolved x-ray diffraction techniques developed in the study of the crystalline polymers PEEK and PET in the investigation of structure/function relationships in polyurethane elastomers relevant to a wide range of products ranging from very rigid hard plastics to very flexible low density foams. We will investigate fatigue and loss processes by exploring and extending existing models against SAXS and WAXS data recorded at synchrotron sources.For time-resolved investigations of PU elastomers a drawing rig designed for use on Station 16.1 at the SRS will be constructed. It will have a cyclic deformation capability in addition to a temperature and humidity controlled environment and integral stress measurement. For single struts of PU foam we will construct a unique miniature version of the elastomer rig. Optimised for use on the microfocus beamline ID13 at the ESRF. For the first time this equipment will allow simultaneous measurement of stress, strain and x-ray data from single struts of foam as small as 30 microns in cross-section and 100 microns in length.
