Summary on Grant Application Form
Based on our recent preliminary observation of SHG from an LB overlay waveguide deposited on to a side-polished single mode optical fibre (Phys. Rev. Lett. Submitted), we aim to optimise the deposition process and material characteristics. The aim of this programme is to investigate SHG in waveguides fabricated from nanoscale Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. Efficient coupling of the pump to the LB waveguide will be achieved by evanescent coupling from the fibre guided beam to the LB film deposited as a low-loss overlay structure. Optimum phase matching techniques will be investigated. Successful demonstration will provide an efficient technique to characterise non-linear LB waveguides removing difficulties encountered with prism coupling, end firing and grating coupling methods. Importantly, successful demonstration will provide a flexible practical way to utilise SHG and other non-linear processes in LB materials.
