Summary on Grant Application Form
The research at Swansea will adapt the general purpose FIDAP computational fluid dynamics pack to provide fully 3-d simulationsof advanced moulding technologies. Fluent will provide the FIDAP package and work with Swansea. Cinpres, Rover Group, Matra BAe, Atlantic Plastics, the Wolfson Centre at Brunel University and IRC in Polymer Science at Leeds University will collaborate .in providing expertise, moulding trial facilities, materials characterisation and testing. The resulting extended simulation capabilities will lead to more confident part and process design, promoting wider and more cost effective use of advanced moulding technologies, reducing development times and leading to products with improved properties. The principal contribution of Brunel University to the proposed research will be the twin screw compounding of study materials, their rheological characterisation, and optimised injection moulding trials based on in-houseconventional and SCORIM moulding machines, together with microstructural and mechanical property characterisation of mouldings. Keywords describing research area of proposal. Moulding, modelling simulation, polymer processing, structural composites, numerical analysis, software engineering, parallel computing
