Summary on Grant Application Form
on-equilibrium diode detector devices for the mid-infrared, and operating at room temperature, have been developed at DERA Malvern. Under zero applied bias, these devices presently exhibit a D* of 6x10 7 cm.Hz (1/2)/W. The programme aims to improve this value to nearer 5x10 9 by the development of the device material, the device structure and optical design. Furthermore, under reverse bias, there appears to be no fundamental obstacle to achieving a background-limited D* of 1x10 11. This goal again requires a careful characterisation of the device material and the optimal design of the device. The detector diodes produced in this programme will be demonstrated in a practical gas monitoring application for important pollutant gases such as the oxides of nitrogen. The possibility of achieving cooled detector performance in a room temperature device is seen as an extremely important advance with relevance to a wide range of environmental, commercial and military needs.
