Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to investigate the coherent magnetic excitations in a number of transition metal systems, close to being magnetically ordered at low temperature. The research is driven by an interest in the fundamental physics of strongly-correlated electron systems . This general class of materials includes heavy fermions and high-temperature superconductors as well as the materials to be investigated. The work will be carried out using inelastic neutron scattering at the international facilities ISIS and the Institute Laue-Langevin. Neutron scattering is direct probe of magnetic excitations. The materials to be investigated include palladium (a nearly ferromagnetic metal), Cr1-xVx (a nearly anti-ferromagnetic metal) and nickel. We will measure the magnetic response in these systems and compare the results with theoretical models describing the magnetism. We will also develop software for the analysis of data collected on new spectrometers at ISIS. The grant is support a research associate, provide resources for neutron scattering, computing and sample preparation.
