Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work will begin by the synthesis of various 1,2 and 1,3 alkylpyridinium salt (APS) oligomers. The synthesis of one APS oligomer has been achieved in my laboratory. We will perform detailed molecular dynamics studies to determine the optimum connecting chain length and functionality as well as identifying the best dianions such as catechol. We will determine the degree of self assembly using NMR n0e studies. Once these preliminary studies have been completed, we will use homochiral dianions such as tartaric acid, which molecular dynamics studies have shown to give clockwise or anticlockwise helices depending on which enantiomer of the dianion is used. These assemblies will then be studied using circular dichroism spectroscopy and these assemblies are expected to display strong CD activity.
