The research will test the hypothesis that the co-precipitation of aluminium and silicon involves the competitive condensation of silicic acid at hydroxyaluminium templates. Both silicic acid and model compounds in which organic groups are substituted for OH groups around the Si centre will be used and both the solution and solid state reaction products will be analysed by nuclear magnetic resonance, infra red and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy. Fluorimetry will be employed to quantify the rate of formation and stability towards dissolution of hydroxyaluminosilicates (HAS). High performance liquid chromatography an evaporative light scattering detector will be used to study the aggregation of HAS towards a stable phase. The research will help to fill a void in our knowledge of the inorganic chemistry of silicon and the results will be of both academic and industrial relevance.
