Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a basic interdisciplinary research project involving plasma assisted vapour deposition technology to create a new type of vibration control based upon conformal Constrained layer Damping (CLD) Coatings. The deposition technology target will be achieved by producing the coating with a structure of alternating soft viscoeleastic and hard layers.Selection of plasma discharge parameters and gas composition will result in deposition of a soft polymeric film and a hard ceramic film. Specific mechanical properties of the layers as well as their chemistry and morphology will be investigated, which will allow optimisation of the deposition process and coating parameters. Data on elastic modulus and geometry of soft and hard layers will be generated in the form of master Curves and used for theoretical and numerical investigations of the resulting damping effect. Theorectical models employing Rayleigh assumed mode methods will be used with simple geometry specimens to select the coating configurations for maximising the modal damping. Extension to more complex geometries of coating optimisation, including sequential coatings, will employ Finite Element modal strain energy methods.
