Safety and risk assessments performed on chemical and process plant, and transportation systems such as pipelines, demand that predictions be made of the dispersing jets and fires that might arise should an accidental release of flammable material occur. The majority of such plant operates at very high pressure, such that any accidental release will ordinarily be at sonic velocities. Recent work has demonstrated that the inaccuracies associated with conventional mathematical modelling approaches mean that current hazard assemessments make over-simplistic assumptions regarding dispersion distances and heat flux loadings from fires. The present work aims to provide computational fluid dynamic models capable of accurately predicting the dispersion of sonic jets, and the lift-off and blow-off characteristics of flames stabilised upon them. This will be achieved through the development of novel and advanced mathematical descriptions of the turbulence fields associated with sonic jets, and of the way in which flames atabilise in such high velocity flows. In order to ensure the ultimate use of the models to be developed, convincing validation of the models will also be pursued through validation of predictions against available experimental data of relevance to safety assessments.
