Summary on Grant Application Form
New media technology is identified by the Technology Foresight initiative as a key feature in the long term development of science and engineering. The Media Research Laboratory at the University of Bristol is a world class facility in which we are currently conducting significant interdisciplinary research in realistic three-dimensional media content acquisition, processing and display. The explorer/1 simulator is a relatively inexpensive high-fidelity single seat simulator suitable for all manner of land vehicles, and both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. This simulator, together with the proposed multi-processor server, offer a new challenging delivery platform for exploiting the results from our recent media research, especially in the context of complex aerospace and advanced transport applications. Furthermore, the simulator is produced by a local Bristol company located close to the University which will greatly facilitate the proposed collaboration. The presence of the Explorer/1 in the market is very likely to lead to a rapid decrease in the cost of other such motion-based systems, presenting the results of our research with a wide and willing market.
