The microwave enhanced recovery of metals from primary and secondary sources.Microwave energy gives rise to an apparent acceleration of chemical reactions and provides a convenient method of transferring energy to a given system. The proposed equipment allocation would be a key factor in research being caried being carried out within the School of Chemical Engineering on the microwave enhanced recovery of platinum group metals from spent autocatalyst and microwave leaching of pyrite from coal.The unit would be used to develop new projects such as the microwave leaching of tetrahedrite (in collaboration with the Institution of Geotechnics, Slovakia) and the Microwave Leaching of Polysulphide Ores in collaboration with Rio Tinto Technology Development Ltd.The system would be used to perform microwave leaching experiments and compare the metal recovery with conventional leaching condition. Quantification of any metal recovery efficiencies will be given and other process benefits assessed in terms of economic and environmental factors.
