Summary on Grant Application Form
A flexible radio Channel Emulator is sought for use in research on Air Interface (AI) issues of both cellular UMTS and Satellite UMTS (S-UMTS) and beyond to Mobile Broadband System (MBS). It is proposed to develop in collaboration with the vendor new broadband options of the emulator product at a range of frequency bands from L to Ka/EHF for both terrestrial and satellite communication environments. Channel measurements and satellite orbit dynamics developed in other projects by Surrey will be used in the development of a comprehensive propagation software driving the emulator hardware. The overall product will form the centre-piece of a flexible air-interface testbed being developed to test and evaluate new air-interface schemes, e.g. W-CDMA, and other hybrids as well as a range of modulation and coding schemes. The latter are being researched in a range of research projects within CCSR. The testbed will thus be used over many projects and will enable the Surrey Group to attain an even stronger position to win new research in the Mobile Communications area.
