Summary on Grant Application Form
We intend to use scanning probe techniques for the investigation of micromagnetic structures in advanced magnetic nanostructures, multilayer films and bulk magnetic materials with application potential for future sensing, storage and actuation purposes. The addition of a state-of-the-art magnetic force microscope will extend our imaging capabilities and will complement well the world-class electron imaging facility in use at Glasgow University. Thus we will use the new instrument to enhance a strong existing research programme by providing new information to which our current techniques deny us access. The new research programme for which we are seeking funds will also have a strong developmental theme as we intend to improve image interpretation and to move towards quantitative analysis of images formed by magnetic force microscopy. This will involve comparison with model systems already well-characterised by high resolution magnetic imaging in the transmission electron microscope. A final aim will be to initiate investigations to which force microscopy is well suited and transmission electron microscopy is not, due to its reliance on specimens on ultra-thin substrates. By way of example we cite investigations to understand the interaction of nanometre-scale magnetic elements with integrated electrical devices.
