The centre of Vibration Engineering was set up as a University Technology Centre in 1990 with the aid of a major grant from Rolls Royce plc. The leading research area is turbomachinery aeroelasticity, which is the study of blade vibration under the effect of unsteady, high-speed, turbulent flows. A number of validated prediction tools are now firmly in place and very rapid progress can be achieved by (i) re-visiting some of the previous case studies using larger mathematical models, and (ii) undertaking investigations of entire compressor and turbine assemblies by considering several flexible bladerows in a single analysis. Both approaches are computationally very expensive and they have not been attempted before in a turbomachinery aeroelasticity context. However, dramatic increases in computing power have transformed such undertakings from being improbable into being viable. Accordingly, funds are sought to acquire a supercomputer so that the aeroelasticity research can be pursued with such large numerical models. After considerable evaluation, an 8-CPU 6-Gb supercomputer, manufactured by Digital, was selected as the most suitable equipment. The total cost of the bid is 117,480, which represents an overall discount of 69% on the list price. The external sponsor, Rolls Royce plc, will pay 70,500 and the balance is requested from JREI.
