The viscoelastic properties conferred upon liquids by polymer additives can improve their performance in engineering applications, eg in lubrication. We propose to use an ultra high speed video system to study stretching, breakup and related rheological phenomena (including cavitation) in viscoelastic liquids under dynamic stressing. This study, in conjunction with our newly developed techniques for the dynamic stressing of liquids by tension, will be used to provide rheological information appropriate to areas of process engineering involving atomisation, lubrication and splashing; and situations involving liquid fracture under rapid pressure fluctuations, such as occur in biomedical applications of low frequency ultrasound.
