Summary on Grant Application Form
The MA500 Scanning Auger microprobe is in constant use to support work in metallurgy, corrosion and adhesion. The proposed research will enable the work programme to be enhanced greatly. The instrument was purchased in 1980 at a cost of 330,000 with co-sponsorship between SERC, industry (Johnson-Mathey) and the University. The overall condition is excellent, but the source is of very low brightness against today's standards. The provision of a new column and a new triple-detector analyser will bring the instrument up to a specification approaching current models. The ability to operate at low potentials will enable advances pioneered at the University to be brought into regular use. These include mapping in surface and bulk plasmons generated in the EELS mode.
