Via extremely close collaboration of the partners, the aim is to develop a novel and cost-effective material processing technique called electrostatic assisted combustion chemical vapour deposition (eCCVD) to produce commercially viable superconducing tapes for use in electric power applications including high field magnets. Key objectives include application of a novel deposition technique to well-characterised metallic substrates, correleation of the process, structure, mechanical and superconducting properties of the tapes on a microscopic and macroscopic scale, and demonstration of its use in a high field magnet. The economics of this manufacturing route will be reviewed throughout the programme. The particular function of the Birmingham contribution will be to provide full characterisation of the microstructural and superconducting properties of the composite tapes at each stage of the processing.
