Reactions which use phase transfer catalysts are currently carried out by dispensing the aqueous and the organic phases in a well stirred reactor followed by the separation of the mixtures into the two phases for product (and catalyst) recovery. There are several disadvantages in the current process, These include emulsification, limitations in and poor definition of interfacial area for phase transfer. Therefore the aim of the proposed research is to firstly develop efficient and compact phase transfer catalytic (PTC) including cross-corrugated membrane reactors and secondly to integrate the electro-catalytic/electrochemical process of reagent generation into the PTC membrane reaction. The research will focus into three main categories of reaction: selective side chain oxidation of alkylaromatics using electrochemically regenerable oxidants, oxidative brominations and anion displacement reactions. The benefits arising from the research is expected to be through improvements in process operation due to catalyst re-use, product separation, process reaction efficiency and reduced waste (reagents, solvants and by-products). (This is a joint proposal between the Chemical and Process Engineering Department of Newcastle University and the Chemistry Department of York University).
